My partner Mia Tranchina and I, visited St. James for our outreach. On Saturday February 8, we went to St. James and played bingo. When we first arrived we were a little scared of what was going to happen. Mia and I knew we could not be awkward because then it would have been weird for the people there. But, we entered through the front door as if we knew every person there. We were able to meet all of the people there and make conversation with them. We met new people, got into deep talks, and helped them play bingo. Mia and I also tried to say funny jokes to make them laugh. Whenever it was time for us to leave, we did not want to. It was such a great experience that we both enjoyed.
This experience really opened my eyes because I was able to make others happy while I was happy doing it. Not many people realize the impact that their presence has on others. Seeing all of their faces really made my day 100 times better. In order to make them comfortable, I spoke to them as if I had known them for years. They looked so excited to see new faces around. Every person that I had talked to was friendly, and we brought joy to each others lives. I wanted them to feel comfortable with my presence, and not make it awkward. Next time I go to St. James, I feel like I should talk to more people. I was able to make connections with a few, but I do think that others were lonely still. Every person deserves comfort and support even with strangers.
